ABOUT Rwenzori Mountains National Park
In 1991, the Rwenzori Mountains National Park was established on the Ugandan side of the Rwenzori Mountains. This includes the central part of the Rwenzori Mountains with its lush tropical forests.
The 996 km² national park was founded to protect the landscape, flora and fauna and preserve them for the future. Today, the reserve is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
The highest mountains in Rwenzori National Park exceed 5,000 meters and are covered in snow all year round. The most important is Mount Stanley, named in honor of Henry Morton Stanley, the first European to see these icy peaks on the African continent. Mount Stanley is also known as Mount Ngaliema. The highest peak is Margherita (5,100 meters high), named after the first Italian expeditionaries who reached its peaks, in honor of Queen Margherita of Italy.
The name "Rwenzori", means something like "snow-capped mountains" in the language of the local Bakonzo people.
Rwenzori is often mistranslated as "rainmaker" or "cloud mountains", although both names accurately describe the features of the mountains.
Rwenzori National Park has been part of the Unesco World Heritage since 1994.
The water of the Rwenzori is the main source of the Nile. Dozens of species of animals and plants are found only in this place on earth.
To get there, you have to undertake a long walk through the impressive nature of the Rwenzori area.
